Thursday, December 30th, 2010

3DS NintendoNews Provided by CNN

The Nintendo 3DS may cause problems for kids under the age of 6, the company said on its website.

Kids younger than 6 who play the 3-D games may have the growth of their eyes stunted, the company said in a statement on its Japanese website.

The warning notes that parents can turn off the 3-D functionality of the handheld 3DS. They can also set passwords that keep kids from using that feature.

The statement also asks everyone who plays the 3-D gaming system to take periodic breaks from the games as often as every hour or 30 minutes.

Baccano! The Complete SeriesThe big DVD releases of 2010 have already appeared, but there is a surprisingly strong slate of anime titles this week.

After several light weeks, there’s a strong anime list led by Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood Part 3 (Funimation, “13+,” 320 min., $49.98, BD $54.98).  FMA Brotherhood is retelling of the Full Metal Alchemist saga that hews much closer to the storyline from the bestselling manga.  Since the original FMA anime was one of the most popular series ever with American audiences, the narrative changes in the new Brotherhood version might not be enough by themselves to justify purchasing the new series, but the new series looks and sounds so great on Blu-ray, that it’s well worth the expense.

Naedoko Kanoko is sort of a loner and she likes it that way. She relishes observing the school dramas, keeping her notes carefully. She is analytical and emphatic that she is objective and keeps it that way by avoiding any sort of friendships or social interactions. Or so she says and so she tries, but life has a way of sneaking in.

Ozoni – Japanese New Year’s Soup with Rice Cakes

Sunday, December 26th, 2010

Author: Asako Suzuki (Manga Line Editor at TokyoPop)

Growing up in Japan, New Year’s Day was just like Christmas here. I remember my sister and I woke up in the morning, quickly dressed up, ran down stairs and sat with our grandparents and parents to exchange New Year’s greetings and resolutions. Then, the highlight of the morning as a young child was to receive OTOSHIDAMA!

On New Year’s Day, Japanese people have a custom of giving money to children, and it is known as otoshidama. In my family, it was given as an annual performance award; the better we behaved in the previous year, the more money we would receive!

News for Entertainment: Kit Kat Bars are different in Japan

Friday, December 24th, 2010

I am involved in lots of discussions about Japanese snacks and products because I work at an Anime store in St. Louis. I thought this one was cool enough to investigate. It began for me when a couple came into the store.  They were drawn in by the Japanese products in the window because their grown child, and their child’s spouse, had taught for several years  in Japan, although they are now back in the United States. Having a nice, general conversation about Lucky Cats (I’m quite found of them myself, we’ve had one for years –  they are cat figurines, small to giant, that have a raised paw), I was intrigued when the wife mentioned that there was an  American candy that the kids always wanted to eat before they took a test, whose name was a play on the Lucky Cat. Luckily, her husband quickly  came up with the Kit Kat brand name. Cool.
