Synopsis:

Volume 6 takes us straight into the meeting of the heads for the families of the Myodha Temple. The discussion all centers on the possibility that there must be a traitor in their midst, there is no other way that the left eye of the impure king could have been stolen so easily. This stirs everyone up and things get a little heated. Once they have adjourned, suspicions heighten and there is even more focus on the remaining right eye. Of course the theft of it is already in motion. The discovery of who is the real traitor is revealed and the eye is lifted without too much trouble. This leaves may questions and even more suspicion toward Tatsuma.

All the while Rin is working hard to learn how to control his flame and once he discovers what is going on, he loses control and everyone sees him flame up. This leaves the them no choice and he is jailed. It is clear that there is still the faction that believes in him and he even receives at strange letter from Tatsuma.

What will happen now that both of they eyes have been reunited? Will this give Rin the opportunity to show which side of the struggle he really is on or will he be kept in jail because, after all, he is a demon and needs to be treated like one?

Commentary:

Blue Exorcist sure does move fast in this volume, there were moments that I was not sure what was going on and if any of it had anything to do with the story. I was able to put things together and once things began to settle down, I understood where we were going with all of this. I don’t know if all of the flash backs in the latter part of the volume helped to do anything other than prolong the story until it can pick up in the next volume. Even though it has a very fast pace, I do see a great deal of wasted time and energy on stuff that doesn’t help do anything. I would understand if there was some character development or more plot discovery, but to just rehash the past for flashback purposes doesn’t really help.

Even with all of the wasted time I still enjoyed this volume and feel like there was something of value happening. I like the way they are driving a wedge into the temple families and providing a opportunity for Rin to prove himself. There is also the aspect that it is not going to be easy for him and that he has two battles to win. I am interested to see if he can do it.

Overall Grade: B-

Unfortunately, I found a little more weakness in this volume than strength and I would have like to see less confusion. There is still plenty of great action going on and the ground work is laid for a real battle to come out of all of this treachery. I am looking forward to see how this turns out.

“In The Radius”

Blue Exorcist is a solid Shonen manga but it still has a ways to match up to these other great series, Naruto, Bleach, D. Gray-Man, and  Soul Eater.
