The “Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai(Haganai) Premium Event” announcedon Sunday that an original video anime called Boku wa Tomodachi ga SukunaiAdd On Disc was green-lit for releaseon September 26. The video anime release will include the unaired 13th episode.

It was announced on Monday that Hiroyuki Okiura’s film A Letter to Momo won the main prize in the “Feature film” category at the Czech AniFest animation festival. A total of seventeen films were screened in the category, though A Letter to Momo was the only Japanese-produced feature-length animation shown. Two other Japanese titles also won awards, with Atsushi Wada taking the main prize in the “Short film up to 5 minutes” category with “The Mechanism of Spring / Haru no Shikumi,” and Mirai Mizue receiving the main prize in the “Music videos” category for “Toru Matsumoto: AND AND.” AniFest 2012 marked the 11th time the festival was held.

TOKYO (AP) — Thousands of Japanese marched to celebrate the switching off of the last of their nation’s 50 nuclear reactorsSaturday, waving banners shaped as giant fish that have become a potent anti-nuclear symbol.

Japan was without electricity from nuclear power for the first time in four decades when the reactor at Tomari nuclear plant on the northern island of Hokkaido went offline for mandatory routine maintenance.

After last year’s March 11 quake and tsunami set off meltdowns at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant, no reactor halted for checkups has been restarted amid public worries about the safety of nuclear technology.

Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender is, perhaps, the closest we’ve come to having a succesful “American anime”. However, it’s been two years since the show went off the air, leaving something of a power vacuum for Americanized versions of the anime aesthetic. Fortunately, the Avatar creators are back with a new series, The Legend of Korra, which stars a girl who’s here to kick butt and chew bubblegum…and she’s all out of bubblegum.

Mecha Mecca – If you thought a 1:1 scale model of a Gundam in Tokyo’s Odaiba Bay was impressive, that was just the tip of the iceberg. Kodansha announced that it will begin publishing Battle Angel Alita, and added two new manga titles, all to launch late this year.  Kodansha will begin publishing Battle Angel Alita: Last Order, by Yukito Kishiro, with volume 16 in December.  The series was previously published by Viz. Movie rights are controlled by uber-director James Cameron, who’s been planning a new film based on the property for years, although it now seems like it may be some time before he gets to it (see “Cameron Signs for Two ‘Avatar’ Sequels“).
