Experiencing life is but a method of training. Merely experiencing the normal activities of life can be used by those who want as a way to train. The Karate Kid is one of the classic examples of how simple chores can help train hand movements. Inner Moka has the same idea for Tsukume.

Innocence can be quite a powerful defense. If you know nothing to the contrary, you will believe your cause is just even if others try explaining otherwise. People always believe their view of the world is the correct way and it can take a lot to shake that view, even if that view is flawed. People always try to construct reality to have themselves playing the role of the savior, victim or good guy while those who oppose them as the bad, even if their goal would bring about disaster.

How much is freedom really worth? Would you be willing to live in the poorest, most dangerous section of town, worrying every day if you can scrape together enough cash, checking coin returns to see if someone forgot a nickle if instead there was a chance to live in luxury, never needing to worry about how much something costs, but under someone else’s rules? For Haruhiko, it is worth that much.

Everyone has at one point or another been discriminated against for whatever reason. It can feel nice to get some satisfaction at showing up those who wronged, but sometimes the negative karma can cause things to backfire. In Rosario + Vampire, where magic and monsters are the norm, this is almost always the case.

Rarely is there a truly compelling series that deals with existentialism with such levels that it transcends the work itself; rarer still does such a work come from the anime and related industries, but Welcome to the N.H.K. is one such series and culture. While many western audiences may be unfamiliar with the specific conditions of the protagonist, Tatsuhiro Sato, it does not diminish the impact of the anime.

Release date: August 14, 2007
Genre(s): Comedy, Drama, Fantasy, Mystery, Slice-of-Life
Format: Anime
Age Rating: 16+
Overall Personal Rating: B
Synopsis:
Popotan, a nonsensical word based on the Japanese word for dandelions (tanpopo), is an anime that will almost certainly evoke a strong reaction from any viewer of either loving it or hating it. There are very few anime out there as ecchi and have as deep a plot as Popotan. It is a testament to director Shinichiro Kimura’s and script writer Jukki Hanada’s abilities that they were able to pull it off. However, its uniqueness makes it hard to fit in with any one category or age group.
